OPERATION
The wrapped spring hinge is comprised of a housing, inner drum (hub), and a stepped spring. The larger diameter step, nests inside the housing while the smaller diameter spring step fits tightly over the inner drum. The housing and inner drum are therefore effectively coupled together by the spring. When the inner drum is rotated in one direction, the small diameter spring step rotates together with it, while the large diameter spring step slips inside the housing. When the drum Direction is reversed the large spring diameter step locks inside the housing and the small spring diameter step slips over the inner drum. The slip torque is the rated torque of the hinge and represents the maximum unbalanced load torque the hinge will support. The spring-wrapped, friction braked hinge is ideally suited in applications requiring the maintenance of an unbalanced torque load in any desired position, through 360º, about a given rotary axis.
INSTALLATION
The model FH-1 friction braked hinge body has built in anti-rotation flats and grooves which allow for both rib and nest installation. In typical rib installation the support material is slotted to the proper dimension across the hinge grooves. The hinge is in then simply slipped into the anti-rotation slot. In a nested installation the flats across the hinge body provide the anti-rotation feature. In this case flats are molded in the support material to correspond to the dimensions of the flats on the hinge body.
Figure-1 illustrates a typical rib installation. The sheet metal chassis(stationary member) provides the longitudinal support for each end. A flatted shaft fitted to the hinge bore and the proper length for the installation is held in place by retaining rings. The cover or platform is keyed to the flatted shaft. The cover may be rotated to any position bi-directional through 360º position. The cover will stay in position at any angle.
